  BACKGROUND

Psiloritis or Idha is the central mountain range of Crete and its summit, Timios Stavros (2,456 m.) is the highest point of the island.
It is venerated as the “Mountain of the God’, because of the legend that Zeus was raised in one of Idha’s caves, Idaion Andron.

Since early antiquity (Minoan times), people from the entire Mediterranean basin made their way to Psiloritis.

It continues to be a pilgrimage site, since a ‘primitive’ church dedicated to Timios Stavros (the Holy Cross) was built on the top a few centuries ago.
